Review by Nicole Leech, Army Wife
Ever had the day where you thought “Why Me?” That happens to most military
spouses when the DoD has given some sort of new order from on high. Much like, ‘your spouse will now be leaving you for 365 days to a place you’ve heard on the news,’ or when you find out, ‘the next place you’ll be living in a month or two is several time zones away.’ These days often bring the “why me’s?” but sometimes we, as military spouses can see the “why NOT me?” in the new adventure before us.
Tara Crooks, Starlett Henderson, Kathie Hightower and Holly Scherer have collaborated on an amazing, positive look at the adventure in military life. Their new book, 1001 Things to Love About Military Life creates a spirit of pride and inspiration. It is easily relatable and instantly causes you to smile or laugh as you recall your experience with that favorite thing. Not only does the book rekindle your memories, but also calls for you to create written history. Along the pages are “Journal Ideas”. These frequent boxes call for you to put down in writing those experiences, a truly unique way to give tribute to your military service. The living legacy they casually suggest gives your future generations insight to what your military life was like.
Intertwining memories and positive thoughts are just part of this amazing new book. You’ll find inspiring quotes, scripture, anecdotes, and organizations you’ll want to repeat and share with others. Tara, Star, Kathie and Holly have captured the true spirit and brighter side of the military.
The things that got me through my 15 years of being in the military were: “Bloom where you’re planted.” I never knew how strong of a mantra that would become for me as a military spouse having to change so many locations (11 in 15 years). And, one person told me, “you never really leave a place, you always take a piece of it with you and leave a piece of yourself behind.”
On this Veterans’ Day weekend, we at SargesList salute Tara, Star, Kathie and Holly for helping us all to celebrate choices in life and see the rich and full beauty amidst the challenges of military life.
Thank you to all who have served, are serving and about to serve. You are the reason for our Freedom.
