Amber Scism, SargesList’s Sales Director, put together these thoughts about her favorite holiday of the year.

For most people, the Fourth of July is a celebration that includes back yard cookouts and fireworks. For me and my family, it always meant celebrating our great nation’s birthday on a military base.

As a military kid, I spent the majority of my life on different Army bases and because of this the Fourth of July always holds a special place in my heart. Each year as the Fourth approached, I would get anxious for the carnival that would arrive by July 2. We were never permitted to go to the carnival prior to the 4th, so when the holiday finally came it was better than Christmas!

My family would spend the entire day riding the various rides, exploring the house of mirrors, playing games, and eating way too many funnel cakes! As nighttime fell, we would make our way to the parade field to prepare for the show that was about to begin.

The fireworks were always spectacular, the crowd completely enthralled. But they are not what I remember the most. Yes, I do get teary eyed when I see fireworks, and hear the national anthem played on this great day, but nothing compares to the scene of the soldiers standing up during the song, “Proud to be an American” that played at every firework show I attended on an Army base right before the first firework went off.

This Fourth of July, when the firework display is amazing you, remember the soldiers, airmen, sailors, and marines that are proudly standing up for us on a daily basis. It is because of their selflessness that our beautiful country is what it is today.

Take time this Fourth to thank a member of our Armed Forces. Visit Forgotten Soldiers Outreach to write a quick letter of support to one of our deployed men and women.

Happy Birthday, America!
