Summer Vacations: Fort Stewart to Savannah

Savannah, Georgia

One of the best things about being stationed at Fort Stewart, Georgia is the close proximity of the Army post to the city of Savannah.  How often in the military do you get to be stationed at a tourist destination?  With summer here, life in Coastal Georgia is heating up in both temperature and fun.  Here are six fun things to do in Savannah this summer:

 Check Out Forsyth Park

Not only is Forsyth Park absolutely beautiful and perfectly situated in the Historic District of Savannah, if also is the host to many fun and family friendly activities.  On Saturday mornings they host a farmer’s market with several local vendors selling food and goods.  Many Friday nights you can hear live music drifting from the park with concerts.  Other nights?  Bring your blanket for a family movie night.

 Visit Tybee Island

Just a few minutes east of the city is Tybee Island, a vacation destination on the water.  Summers in Georgia can get unbearably hot and humid and the beach offers the perfect escape.

 Visit the Museums

Savannah has no shortage of museums to visit.  Have kids?  Check out the Georgia State Railroad Museum or the Children’s Museum – conveniently located right next to each other.  Other local attractions include the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum, Savannah History Museum, or the Telfair Museum of Art. (Hint: Check out Blue Star Museums Рthere are many regional museums offering free admission.)

Take a Trolley Tour

One of the best ways to see Savannah is by trolley.  Taking a trolley tour at the beginning of your visit can give you a good idea of what areas of the city you want to learn more about.  Savannah’s history is long and varied to meet the interests of any visitor.  A trolley tour is a fantastic way to get introduced to what the city has to offer.

 Go Paranormal

Savannah is consistently voted one of the most haunted cities in the United States.  There are many different kinds of ghost tours to choose from that all focus on Savannah’s grim past.  From walking tours to rides a hearse you are sure to hear from stories that make your hair stand on end.

Visit River Street

Savannah is one of the largest import ports in the country and River Street is located directly on the Savannah River.  Watch some of the huge ships come in while sipping your adult beverage walking along the river (Savannah lets you carry your drink with you in a plastic cup!).  There are no shortages of restaurants to choose from for your dining pleasure and many a Saturday you will find the street lined with art vendors.

No matter what you choose to do in Savannah you will undoubtedly have a great time.  With activities to peek the interests of all the members of the group the city is sure to not disappoint.  If you are lucky enough to get stationed at Fort Stewart be sure to take advantage of everything this historic city has to offer.
